Species Codes

Because a given species can have several common names and a long drawn-out scientific name, species codes commonly used in the scientific arena are used to ensure consistent data entry and retrieval at the Center for Forest Provenance Data. This coding system usually uses the first two letters of the genus followed by the first two letters of the species. In cases where this would conflict with another code, alternative codes are assigned.

To find the code for a species of interest, enter all or part of of the common name or scientific name and click the "Search" button. You will see a complete list of species that meet your search criteria with links to web sites containing details about them.

If the species of interest is not found, it can be added by contacting the database manager:
