Species Lookup

Information needed for a given forest provenance study includes the species involved in the study. Because a given species can have several common names, and/or a long drawn-out scientific name, species codes commonly used in the scientific arena will be used at the Center for Forest Provenance Data. This coding system usually uses the first two letters of the genus followed by the first two letters of the species. In cases where this would conflict with another code, alternative codes are assigned.

The program below allows you to search for a given plant species by either scientific or common name, and retrieve those that match your search criteria, along with the species code (column name = species ID). The page returned from clicking on the search on these criteria button below will show a complete list of tree / shrub / general plant species that meet your specifications, along with links to web sites containing details about them.

  • If the species of interest is not found, it can be added by contacting the web manager.

  • If a search is performed with no criteria entered, no matches will be found, and a blank list will appear.
